Painter Of Light Infomercial

Notice how Thomas Kinkade wears a smock and how he holds his paint brush. He's not actually in his studio or painting, but he has the costume because thats what the customers want.

Notice the painting changes as the light dims. Why didn't I think of that?!

I used to write ad copy for Kinkade licensed counted cross-stitch kits. Oh the humanity!

I was so delighted to come upon your examination of the Thomas Kinkade phenomenon here, Stagg. At one time I became fascinated with this guy and read as much as I could find about him. It was like picking a scab. I knew I ought not do it, but I could not help myself. Maybe Candy remembers that.

He is beyond the pale. The man harbors not one milligram of shame. I will refrain from making some snide remark about how good the stuff looks in a double-wide right next to the tapestry with the dogs playing cards.

If there ever was an illustration incarnate of H.L. Mencken's famous observation, this man is it:

"Nobody ever lost money underestimating the taste of the American people."

If the God-given role of the artist is to elevate his audience in some way--aesthetically, intellectually, emotionally, whatever--or profoundly move his audience in some way, then this man is the Antichrist.

But I did not miss your point. What I laughingly refer to as his oeuvre has a lot to do with a lot of things, but absolutely nothing to do with art. If he would simply refrain from referring to himself as an "artist" and to his work as "art," perhaps I could make peace with him. Perhaps. For example, if he would simply call his pieces "gewgaws. . ."

I know I risk condemnation as an elitist, but I just do not care.

But what do I know? Maybe some of his shit will wind up in the Tate someday.
